The Symphony welcomes back Musical America’s 2017 Composer of the Year, composer/DJ Mason Bates for a tradition-filled concert on April 6th. Alternative Energy, an ‘energy symphony’ spanning four movements and hundreds of years, while highlighting many symphonic and electronic effects performed, cued, and integrated by Mason Bates who will be seated in front of his MacBook on stage. The program will then focus on one of Mason’s more provocative works, Passage, for mezzo-soprano, orchestra, and laptop. Famed mezzo Sasha Cooke will join the Symphony for this performance. Commissioned to commemorate the centennial of John F. Kennedy, the work examines the theme of American exploration through the visionary words of Walt Whitman and actual recorded fragments of JFK’s “moonshot” speech. The 50th Anniversary of the moon landing is celebrated in 2019. This performance will end with Richard Strauss’ classic, Also Sprach Zarathustra. The opening is one of the most recognizable musical excerpts in history, famously used at the start of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. This grand style climax brings the Orchestra full circle, as they end their incredible season as they began – in space.
