A special evening celebration of two extraordinary composers, Ludwig Van Beethoven and Claude Debussy. 2018 marks the centenary of Debussy, therefore featuring his most famous work written for orchestra, LA MER (The Sea). A work that adventures into a magical world of sensual images of the sea in all its variety, La Mer is powerfully provocative and beautifully imaginative.
We also welcome one of the most prolific young Beethoven interpreters today, JONATHAN BISS performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.1, some of his most cheerful and playful writing for the piano. Also on the program is British composer Sally Beamish’s Third Piano Concerto: City Stanza (2017), written for Jonathan Biss.
“All the material in my work derives in some way from the Beethoven concerto, taking a small group of notes or a rhythmic pattern from each corresponding movement as a starting point. The concerto is inspired by Jonathan’s individual, expressive and virtuosic playing, and the clarity of his sound-world. It is also affected by our shared anxiety about the future.”
